- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Scott Comyns is one of the Hunter Valley’s brightest young winemakers, and being Hunter Valley through-and-through it comes as no surprise to see him absolutely nail his first Semillon under his and his wife Missy’s very own label.
For his inaugural Comyns & Co. Semillon Scotty has ventured to the famed ‘Army Block’ vineyard, so named due to its proximity to the Singleton Army Base. The fruit is all hand-picked and whole bunch pressed, with the resulting output of just 150 or so cases of wonderful Hunter Sem.
Scott mentioned to us when we looked through his exciting range of wines that “phenolics are too often forgotten about by winemakers making Semillon”, and he has managed to work in some lovely texture and grip to balance what is gorgeously fresh and pure fruit.
It received a terrific 93+ points from Campbell Mattinson, and while it will no doubt be long-lived it’s ready to rock and roll right away.
A great debut for a hugely exciting new Hunter producer and whether you’re a Semillon fan or not this is a delicious drink!
What It Tastes Like
“The wine is good. It’s piercing. It’s Hunter semillon, straight, pure, direct, uncompromised. Lemon, wet slate, a whisper of herbs. Bone dry and impressively persistent; it has a keen future.” - Campbell Mattinson
93+ points. “Grown on the Army Block, a well-known block in Hunter winemaking circles though perhaps not-so-much outside of said circles. I think I recall Brokenwood putting out wines under the Army Block name but I know little else about it. The wine is good. It’s piercing. It’s Hunter semillon, straight, pure, direct, uncompromised. Lemon, wet slate, a whisper of herbs. Bone dry and impressively persistent; it has a keen future.”

About the Producer
Comyns & Co.
Comyns & Co. is the exciting new label of highly awarded young Hunter Valley winemaker Scott Comyns and his wife Missy. After years of plying his trade with bigger Hunter producers, Scotty’s made the bold move to go out on his own and create wines that he loves. “It’s the Hunter Valley that I wanted to see”, Scotty explains… “Young, fun, edgy - we want something different that stands out”. The wines are very well made, fun to drink and provide a great alternative to more traditional Hunter Valley fare. A name to watch!
The Hunter Valley is the home of Semillon in Australia. Arguably the best in the world, Hunter Semillon is one of Australia’s most truly unique wine styles. But with a new generation of winemakers comes innovation. Now we are seeing risks being taken, new varieties being planted and some inspired winemaking which is writing a new chapter in the Hunter Valley’s rich history.
