- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
A bit of a unique offering here from Jasper & Sophie Button. The Basketolo is made from homegrown Nebbiolo (and a little Pinot Noir) from their family-owned vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. The clone of Nebbiolo (111) is traditionally used for making Rosé, here, they've made a wine that sits somewhere between a red and Rosé and it's incredibly tasty. All about freshness and drinkability, this will even take a slight chill when the weather calls for it. A completely individual release from Bro and Sis Button.
What it Tastes Like
Raspberries gallore. A slice of ruby grapefruit. It sores with aromatics, so lifted and vibrant to smell. Hits the same notes in the mouth. It's tart and savoury with tannin. There a huge refreshment factor here too. Finishes with a bitter twist of orange peel/campari which makes you reach for the glass again and again. Wicked drinking.
Pinot Nebbiolo Estate Blend, Nebbiolo three months skin contact, rose clone 111, light in colour, raspberries and apple skin, savoury finish with ashy tannins.
Bottle Size: 750ml
Drink Until: 2020
About the Producer
Commune of Buttons
We love the Commune of Buttons story and more importantly, we love the wines. Siblings Jasper and Sophie Button returned home a few years ago to help save their family vineyard, planted primarily to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay 20 years ago by their mother. They began restoring the site and transitioning to organic and biodynamic principles, and at some point decided that rather than sell off their prized grapes to others, they’d turn their hand to winemaking. Just a couple vintages in, the results have been fabulous. The wines are made very naturally with only minimal sulphur additions and slow, gentle ferments.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
Nebbiolo is one of the world’s truly great wine grapes. Most famously produced in the Italian regions of Barolo and Barbaresco, this king-pin of varieties is making a surge on Australian soil. A notoriously late ripening variety, Australian producers are constantly refining the way they grow this grape. Nebbiolo wines are light to medium bodied with incredible internal power and structure. These wines can live for decades when grown on the right sites. The classic descriptors of ‘tar & roses’ are often applied to this variety but the scope for complexity and nuance in the best versions is virtually limitless. The life of a great Nebbiolo as it matures through the years is one of the great wonders in all of wine.
