- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Jasper and Sophie Button are making some of the classiest natural wines available on the market.
From top to tail, these wines are farmed, fermented and bottled with love and it shows in the juice.
In the making of the 2016 ABCD Chardonnay, the fruit from this vineyard, in the Basket Range in the Adelaide Hills, hit ripeness quite early. A third of the fruit was left on skins for 90 days, while the rest lay quiet in barrel.
According to Jasper, “This year you got amazing, ripe Chardonnay fruit flavours at really low alcohols. And all that amazing texture and tannin comes from that skin contact.”
It’s a gentle wine of easy flow. Nothing added, nothing subtracted, just a beautiful interpretation of Chardonnay from a pair of excellent people.
What It Tastes Like
White peach, mandarin peel, brazil nuts and basil. Wet stone and soft powdery tannins give a beautiful mouth feel. It’s round. but not in a buttery kind of way, it’s more gossamer and flush with delicate flavour. Lovely pure flow and feel. Gorgeous drink.
Grown organically in the Basket Range, Adelaide Hills.
Naturally made from fermentation to bottling. No additions of any kind. Wild ferment, zero sulphur.
Bottle Size: 750ml
About the Producer
Commune of Buttons
We love the Commune of Buttons story and more importantly, we love the wines. Siblings Jasper and Sophie Button returned home a few years ago to help save their family vineyard, planted primarily to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay 20 years ago by their mother. They began restoring the site and transitioning to organic and biodynamic principles, and at some point decided that rather than sell off their prized grapes to others, they’d turn their hand to winemaking. Just a couple vintages in, the results have been fabulous. The wines are made very naturally with only minimal sulphur additions and slow, gentle ferments.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
