The name Clonakilla needs no introduction, nor does it's benchmark Riesling. Grown on the Clonakilla estate vineyard in Murrumbateman, this, along with Ken Helm's Rieslings have long been the gold standard for Riesling in the region. The 2016 looks like a classic vintage of this wine built for drinking now or in more than a decade's time. This is, as Mike Bennie described it, "a great introduction" to Tim Kirk's house style, Mike describing it as "mineral-charged, tangy, succulent." Looking to get familiar with Canberra Riesling? Then look no further.
What it Tastes Like
"Effortless drinking here, with a high quality feel. Zips along on piercing acidity that drills a zingy hole through the juicy, cool, limey fruit character found in the wine. Aromas are floral, citrussy, lime and kaffir lime leaf, ginger scented, faintly yeasty. Pretty as. Fresh, flirty, then finishes with fine, chalk-meets-crushed-slate vibe. That tight clip to the finish says cellar long." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
96 point. Pale straw-green; accelerates continuously through to the aftertaste; the mid-palate progressively builds ripe lime flavours as the wine is retasted, but is matched by the fine acidity of the finish and lingering aftertaste. Sustained by that acidity, it has an outstanding future." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 95 points. "A pure and pristine Clonakilla riesling that contrast the delicacy of lime blossom with the palate depth of kaffir lime spice, granny smith apple, even a hint of guava. There’s acid line and precision to tone its intensity, lingering with outstanding line and length. Tense acidity is well integrated and toned by mouth filling texture." 93+ points. The El Nino had started to throw its weight around, giving us consistently warm and dry conditions, but then, a counter punch to the rising drought: 90mm of rain in the last week of January. Perfect timing and an undoubted blessing given the heat that was rolling down the line. Classicly made Riesling. Pressed to stainless.
Closure: Screw Cap

About the Producer
Clonakilla is one of the true icons of the Australian wine scene.
Since its inception, it has been one of (if not THE) leading lights of the Australian cool climate wine insurgence. They boast one of the most collectable wines in the country with their Shiraz Viognier and are considered the benchmark for all things Canberra.
Quite simply, one of the true gems in the Australian Wine Industry crown.
Canberra. A mountain of potential. A sleeping giant of Australian wine. The ability of this region to produce world class wines in only a relatively short history is almost second to none in the whole country. We have some absolute geniuses to thank for developing this region. People have taken notice. Canberra wine is some serious gear. With the ability to produce everything from perfumed and tightly wound Syrah, to razor sharp Riesling and a bunch of emerging varieties in the ground excelling, Canberra will be one of the ‘must watch’ wine producing regions in Australia for many years to come.
Riesling is the king of white grapes. With unparalleled versatility, it rightfully carries the ‘Noble’ name tag. We make extraordinary Riesling in Australia, from far and wide. From the classic searing, razor-sharp styles in the Clare and Eden Valleys to the fragrant and enchanting wines of the Great Southern, Australian Riesling is a chameleon that can take on many forms. Sweet, steely, lean or textured, the world of Riesling is a thing of wonder that should be explored by all true lovers of wine.
