The name Clonakilla needs no introduction, nor does it's benchmark Riesling. Grown on the Clonakilla estate vineyard in Murrumbateman, this, along with Ken Helm's Rieslings have long been the gold standard for Riesling in the region. The 2016 looks like a classic vintage of this wine built for drinking now or in more than a decade's time. "Effortless drinking here, with a high quality feel. Zips along on piercing acidity that drills a zingy hole through the juicy, cool, limey fruit character found in the wine. Aromas are floral, citrussy, lime and kaffir lime leaf, ginger scented, faintly yeasty. Pretty as. Fresh, flirty, then finishes with fine, chalk-meets-crushed-slate vibe. Pale straw-green; accelerates continuously through to the aftertaste; the mid-palate progressively builds ripe lime flavours as the wine is retasted, but is matched by the fine acidity of the finish and lingering aftertaste. The El Nino had started to throw its weight around, giving us consistently warm and dry conditions, but then, a counter punch to the rising drought: 90mm of rain in the last week of January. Perfect timing and an undoubted blessing given the heat that was rolling down the line. Classicly made Riesling. Pressed to stainless.
