- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Winemaker Charlotte Hardy has found a happy home in the Adelaide Hills. Her blossoming Charlotte Dalton wine label is producing hit after hit. One for the 'must-watch' list if you're into the Avant Gard of SA wine. Big things to come if her first releases are any indicator. Here, Charlotte tackles Adelaide Hills Shiraz with a gentle touch. This is Wendouree clone Shiraz fermented with 30% whole bunches and soft kiss of new oak. It's a Shiraz set to make you blush. Charlotte's hands-off approach yielding maximum deliciousness in the 2016 release. Dizzyingly perfumed, swift and fleet-of-foot through the mouth, this is what cooler climate Shiraz is all about.
What it Tastes Like
"Mega perfume! So vibrant, so floral, so pretty in sweet fruit, so lovely in sweet spice. It’s beautiful to sniff on, inviting like warm pie on a window sill. Soft and succulent to taste, pure fruit, vibrant with jube and jammy characters but crisp and crunchy enough in tannin and acidity to keep everything squeaky and fresh. Glug glug! It’s fun times, pretty drinking with some added charm in finer detail. Has sophistication and drinkability in tow." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
92 points. "From a tiny plot of vines in Balhannah, Adelaide Hills. Sees about 30% whole bunch and a smidge of new oak in the maturation. Seriously flying start to this fledgling solo project from Charlotte Hardy in South Australia. Keep your eyes peeled. Mega perfume! The Love me, love you Shiraz comes from the Balhannah area of the Adelaide Hills. Balhannah experiences very cool nights which are optimal for slow, even ripening. The 2016 Shiraz was harvested mid March. The wine was fermented with indigenous yeast. 30% whole bunch, plunged just twice a day, pressed off after 18 days on skins and maturated in French oak barrels, of which 20 % were new. While the wine is resting in barrel in through winter I leave them to their own devices, I let them be to hibernate. I racked the barrels to tank in October, when they seemed to have come into their own, let them mellow out in tank for a while then bottled in November. I don't filter the Shiraz so you may notice some special bits of love in the bottom of the bottle!

About the Producer
Charlotte Dalton Wines
Charlotte Hardy has travelled the world on a wine odyssey only to find herself settled down in amongst the lush hills of the Basket range. Her wines are made naturally, without any additions where possible. They are pure and unique an have a certain gentleness about them, just their makers.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
