- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Chalmers Rosato is a unique take on Rosé and you'd expect nothing less from the Chalmers family. This vintage is a blend of Sagrantino and Aglianico, picked from the highest portion of the Chalmers family vineyard. Both varieties are renowned for their savoury tones and rugged tannins which makes them an interesting choice for Rosé, but somehow the combining of this unlikely duo just works a treat. It's bright, textural and spicy and with a little grip - a one of a kind Rosé from a one of a kind Australian vineyard.
What it Tastes Like
Smells of pomegranate, orange peel and spiced campari notes. There's a hint of floral characters in the mix and a touch of dried herbs. Smells brilliant. Tight and bright and crisp and dry with a hint of creaminess from the barrel ferment portion. Classy and unique wine.
92 points. "Copper-crimson in colour and right on the money for flavour. There’s a musky bubble-gum character here but it’s underpinned by a crushed-leaf savouriness and graphite-infused cherries/cranberries. Exotic, it certainly is, but from a platform of dryness. Indeed in rosé terms this feels noticeable ‘structural’. Lay down misere." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
In 2016 the Chalmers family sourced the grapes for their rosato from the highest altitude, most prized block at their Heathcote site. A unique blend from two savoury and tannic varieties; Sagrantino (70%) and Aglianico (30%). Both parcels of fruit were hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, and vinified separately with the Sagrantino parcel fermented in stainless steel tank, and the Aglianico parcel fermented in old French barriques. Both parcels were wild fermented with no acid additions, and blended together once dry.

About the Producer
No family in Australia has done more for the continued emergence of alternative grape varieties than the Chalmers. Since the mid-1980’s Bruce and Jenni Chalmers have been responsible for importing up to 70 alternative varieties into Australia, culminating in them establishing the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show in 1999. They are true visionaries of the Australian wine scene and we are eternally grateful for their forward thinking and courage to bravely plant what no one had planted before them. They brought with them the first ripples of the tsunami of Italian varieties hitting the Australian market.
Heathcote’s reputation is for big Shiraz. And they do it so well. But the times they are a changin’ with Italian varieties such as Fiano, Sangiovese, Nero d’Avola and Sagrantino all finding themselves well at home in the ancient Cambrian soils.
