- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Shadenfreude is the spicy, wild-eyed brain-child of Andries and Yoko of Brave New Wine. This is a dark and savoury Shiraz from a single vineyard in the South of Western Australia. It's a sleek and elegant Shiraz with an edge. A healthy amount of whole-bunch is used during ferment lending a firm architecture to this smooth and seductive drink. No additions during winemaking except a dash of sulphur. Another ripping release from this red-hot WA winery.
What it Tastes Like
Smells of boysenberry, a snip of green herb and exotic spice. There's attitude in this glass. It's tightly focused, wound-up and framed with spicy tannin. A swift wine, trim and taut. It grooves through the mouth, all swanky and sleek. Flavour builds with time in the glass. This is good, interesting, smashable cool-climate Shiraz with some spunk.
93 points "There are a lot of bright/lively wines about but this takes vibrancy to a new level. It swims with bright, fresh fruit; it has that ever-so-seductive just-fermented feel. It tastes like raspberry coulis, all sweet and essential, its purity laid bare. Spice, herb and floral notes continue the exotic, heady impression, while a churn of flavour-infused tannin establishes some boundaries. We have once again a beautiful wine on our hands here." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
Gibraltar Rock vineyard - Porongurup. Sustainably managed with some Bio-dynamic inputs. 37-year-old dry-grown vines. Extremely ancient granitic Porongurup loam soils.

About the Producer
Brave New Wine
It is a Brave New World and these are, in every sense, Brave New Wines. This range is brought to you by husband and wife duo Andries and Yoko Lüscher-Mostert. They are making painfully small amounts of fascinating, experimental and delicious wine from some superb vineyards in Great Southern. With a vision of acquiring their own vineyard in the future, they are currently content to make wines that truly thrill them. These are natural wines crafted without additions but with bucket-loads of love and skill. Some of the most intriguing vino in WA and definitely a winery to keep an eye on.
The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
