The Magical Animal is a new Chardonnay from Brave New Wine.
The fruit is sourced from the stunning organically grown Isolation Ridge vineyard in Frankland River. The fruit is foot stomped by Yoko and Andries then sent to a single brand new French oak puncheon for wild ferment.
The resultant wine is a raucous and wild version of Chardonnay that blows your hair back.
What It Tastes Like
Smoky and reductive smells fly from the glass. It’s fleshy with layers of burnt butter atop tinned peach and lemon preserve. There’s some soft grip in the mouth which keeps it cinched in. Flavours of whipped butter and peaches intertwine to create a crazy whirlwind of taste. Wild and untamed Chardonnay with attitude and flair.
93 points “Starts with a honey-drizzled, savoury, nougat, oatmeal kind of scent, with back ground ripe stone fruit and apple. The palate feels quite decadent, lush but fresh with crisp tingles of lime juice acidity. It’s round and soft in the palate, loads more oatmeal, brown sugar-on-porridge, green apple. It’s got all that ‘classic Australian chardonnay’ density and generosity, but draped in a funky feel. I really like this.”

The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
