What it Tastes Like
This is a different beast to last year. More of a 'classic' orange wine if there were such a thing. It's chalky and smells of mango, grapefruit, smoke and pith. There's some bergamot tea aromatics and a touch of Angostura Bitters in the mix. It has it's own groove and enthusiasts of the style should love it for that.
91 points "It’s orange in colour, is made via extended skin contact, in old barrels, and is more its own thing, rather than Chardonnnay. So now we’ve got that out of the way, here we go. Peach, crystallised ginger, white pepper, chamomile, or something floral, a bit of smokiness and sweaty funk. Light and fresh, tangerine and peach, but with a distinct cider vinegar tang (that I like, as it’s not dominant), gentle grip of tannin, layers of spice and a ruby red grapefruit aftertaste. With a vision of acquiring their own vineyard in the future, they are currently content to make wines that truly thrill them. These are natural wines crafted without additions but with bucket-loads of love and skill. Some of the most intriguing vino in WA and definitely a winery to keep an eye on.
The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone.
