- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
MRLO is a wine that aims to change some of the preconceptions of Australian Merlot. This McLaren Vale grown fruit is fermented wild in clay amphora, settled, then aged in amphora for a further nine months. Brad also makes the addition of 10% Nero d'Avola for an extra bit of pep and funk turning this often maligned variety into something pretty unique. It's not just creatively put together, it's also undeniably delicious. It's quite exciting to see Merlot so perfumed, so energetic and so more-ish. Only 200 dozen made.
What it Tastes Like
Really leaps out of the glass with an evocative perfume of plums, blackberries and subtle herbs and spices. The palate is plush with the variety's typical ripe fruit profile but the Nero clearly adds a dimension which is so much fresher, livelier and more savoury than many Australian Merlots. What fun!
93 points. "Seems like the red noble variety staples of McLaren Vale have been dialled down a touch by winemaker Brad Hickey. Nice. This is a merlot with a lot of charisma, and quite a unique flavour profile, done right. From ‘Lennon Vineyard’. Secret weapon might be the addition of 10% nero d’avola. All seductive charm here. Bolshy bouquet of plums, mocha powder, soy sauce, pepper, dried rosemary. Nice start. Washy in the palate, good concentration though softness and easy appeal is inherent. Touch of soy sauce, iodine and slightly dried out through the finish, but overall a nice experience from that. It’s quite structured, tinged with amaro-like herb ‘n’ spice (and fennel), red fruited in flavour and chock full of personality. Tick tick tick." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
Picked from the neighbouring clay soils of Lennon Vineyard in the Vale, planted in 1994, our third Merlot benefited from the abundant and balanced growing season of 2016. Back in the winery we fermented the grapes in amphora and one ton open fermenters then pressed off post ferment. After settling, the wine was added back to the clay pots for a further 9 months ageing. A 10% splash of Nero d'Avola added acidity, tannin and a touch of the exotic.

About the Producer
Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking ‘yank’ Brad Hickey. With a background as one of America’s top sommeliers, Hickey came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much-loved Omensetter vineyard. Wildly original and top quality stuff!
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
