- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking ‘yank’ Brad Hickey. In his former life, Hickey was one of America’s top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York’s finest wine lists.
He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.
Hickey’s wines are gaining high praise from writers, trade and clued up collectors, and are well worth getting to know.
‘GR/M’ is a blend of Grenache and Mourvedre, with the latter adding structure and depth to the Grenache that Hickey believes can be a little sweet on its own. The grapes are biodynamically grown and co-fermented in open-topped fermenters, resulting in a particularly harmonious and balanced blend.
What It Tastes Like
Hits the nail square on, does this. It takes flight with the sweet raspberried goodness of Grenache from great year. The Mataro brings some gravelly base-notes but it stays firmly in the red fruit spectrum. Red ribbon licorice, spice and orange peel. Finishes with a flurry of spices and cleansing acidity. Super release from Brad & Nicole.
Two parcels of Grenache and Mataro from a Biodynamically farmed site in the distinctive sandy soils of Blewitt Springs were hand-picked on the same day and co-fermented using wild yeast in an open fermenter for 2 weeks. Ten months in trusty French puncheons further forged the fine red berry tones of Grenache (70%) with the savoury spice of Mataro (30%).
‘Pretty nose, floral and sweet fruited, notes of orange peel and spice from the Mataro co-mingles nicely with the lively, bright red fruited Grenache. Medium bodied, easily accessible with dusty tannins, the GR/M strikes a nice counterbalance between the openly fruity nature of Grenache and the darker, more brooding nature of Mataro. Transparent.’ – Brad Hickey, Vinitor, March 24, 2017.

Wildly original and top quality stuff!
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Grenache is the great sleeping giant of Australian red wine. We are the custodians of the oldest producing Grenache vines in the world, some ancient vineyards planted as far back as the 1850’s. Modern Australian Grenache is a different beast to the wines of yesteryear, they are more youthful and vibrant, showing bright red fruit characters, silky tannins and a delicious array of spices. With the viticultural resources we have at our disposal in this country, Australia can be one of the world’s leading producers of this variety, making wines that easily rival the best of Europe.
