What it Tastes Like
"A translucent ruby/violet in colour. The nose is lifted, aromatic, complex with jalapeno chilli and a roasted, sweet charred green capsicum nose, like chilli rellenos from a Mexican bodega, violet leaf. There is pepper, cedar, meat, ashes, rose petals, earthy fragrances like piles of leaves in autumn, exactly what this vineyard smells like after a summer rain. Our third Cabernet Franc, 100% grown from a neighbouring vineyard planted in 2001 and made at Brash HQ. Vintage 2016 provided good growing conditions for Cab Franc with an even season punctuated by small berry set. Five weeks on skins in small open top fermenters followed by eight month in eight year old hogsheads.

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking ‘yank’ Brad Hickey. With a background as one of America’s top sommeliers, Hickey came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much-loved Omensetter vineyard. Wildly original and top quality stuff!
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
C’Franc, as it is affectionately know, is often one of the more overlooked varieties from the Bordeaux region. Traditionally used as mainly a blending variety, this grape has been experiencing somewhat of a reinvigoration lately as more and more producers recognise its potential to create highly aromatic, crunchy and delectable reds in its own right.
