The Gamma Ray is the wacky invention of Tom Belford at Bobar wines.
This is 75% Gamay blended with 25% Cabernet Franc, 100% whole bunch and 100% free from any additions including sulphur. There were three barrels of Gamay and one of Cab Franc in the winery, all picked from the same vineyard - Tom blended them on a whim. It turned out a treat.
This wine is a wild ride. It’s bright and crunchy, yet funky and mercurial all at once. A wine unlike any you are likely to have tried before. Perfect for the adventurous drinker and the devoteés of the natural wine movement.
What It Tastes Like
This is so interesting. Light pink, it almost glows in the glass. Notes of Campari, almost Negroni-like bitterness. Some slight herbaceous notes from Cab Franc. Airy and fairy flossy style though, nips with raspberry, grapefruit, and blood orange and hints of grilled nuts and savoury, earthen notes to close. Shuts the door with soft wisps of tannin. Out there for sure, but loads of fun to drink.
Naturally made with no additions. Both varieties grown on a single vineyard in the Yarra Valley.

Tom and Sally Belford are pioneers of the natural wine movement in the Yarra Valley and indeed Australia. Using fruit from their own estate and gentle, hands-off winemaking they’ve developed a cult following for their delicate, finessed and savoury expressions of Syrah and Chardonnay.
