- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Brendan Keys has been championing this more perfumed, vibrant expression of Grenache for some time and with the hordes of smaller McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley producers now following suit, it seems his vision has been vindicated. This comes from the Blewitt Springs sub-region that is responsible for some of the country's most exciting old vine Grenache. 100% whole bunches, wild yeast fermented and 100% old, neutral French oak - this is all about raw, beautiful Grenache fruit. As BK said himself it's more reminiscent of a spicy, savoury 'Garnacha' (Spanish for 'Grenache') than the typical rich and luscious Aussie renditions, looking for structure and power with an edge of beauty.
What it Tastes Like
The 2016 is a powerful, gravelly, Grenache. It smells of bergamot tea, licorice all sorts, fresh cherries and mulched bark. Dark and moody with some floral highlights. Enchanting. Serious. Muscular. One of the cellar.
94 points "Good colour; grenache is as grenache does - in McLaren Vale, that is. Rich cherry and plum fruits with a stack of spices, and no confection notes; long and juicily rounded in the mouth." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
100% Blewitt Springs Grenache. 100% whole bunch, wild yeasts, one month on unmacerated skins, matured in 100% neutral French puncheons.
Closure: Screw Cap

About the Producer
BK Wines is one of the poster boys of the modern artisan wine movement in the Adelaide Hills. Owner / winemaker Brendan Keys is not afraid to do things differently. His wines are all from single vineyards (some biodynamically farmed), fermented with wild yeasts, unfined and unfiltered, with extended skin contact and even clay fermentation eggs occasionally thrown in for good measure. Wild stuff!
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Grenache is the great sleeping giant of Australian red wine. We are the custodians of the oldest producing Grenache vines in the world, some ancient vineyards planted as far back as the 1850’s. Modern Australian Grenache is a different beast to the wines of yesteryear, they are more youthful and vibrant, showing bright red fruit characters, silky tannins and a delicious array of spices. With the viticultural resources we have at our disposal in this country, Australia can be one of the world’s leading producers of this variety, making wines that easily rival the best of Europe.
