In this wine, Brendan Keys is going for a true Grigio style, a wine which is all about being "pure, crisp and vibrant". This year's version is inspired by a good Gin & Tonic, if that gives you an idea of the direction it's heading. The fruit from around Lenswood can handle a bit of work, so he leaves it sit on its lees for four months prior to bottling. This is some delicious juice, the wild yeast and hands-off winemaking approach allowing the fruit to do the talking. Sometimes less really is more.
What it Tastes Like
Smells of apple skins and lemon drops and just-ripe-pears. Soft nutty/meally notes in the background. Nice grip and clean crisp acid. Oh and that twist of lemony tangy. Lip-smacking stuff. Grigio with some character and attitude.

2016 Pinot Grigio Pinot Grigio – as opposed to her twin sister, Pinot Gris – is intended to be linear and citric. This year’s BK offering is indeed that, bearing striking structural resemblance to gin & tonic with lime. Licorice root, quinine and lemon pith notes give this wine a refreshing, aperitif tang. However, hints of the Pinot Gris sibling are readily apparent with complexing layers of Scottish shortbread, sandalwood and pear Danish on the nose and palate. And here’s a fun alchemy experiment you can try safely at home: leave this wine open for 24 hours and she’ll magically transform to become her sister’s soft-tempered doppelganger.

His wines are all from single vineyards (some biodynamically farmed), fermented with wild yeasts, unfined and unfiltered, with extended skin contact and even clay fermentation eggs occasionally thrown in for good measure. Pinot Gris is a variety that can take on many forms. In one instance it’s crisp, racy and light as in the case of Pinot Grigio, the next it’s round and voluptuous, and sometimes it presents as pinkish or even red! This versatility makes it an incredibly interesting grape. It loves skin contact, it loves lees stirring, it loves anything a winemaker can throw at it, but always it will show lovely perfume, tasty fruit and excellent mouthfeel. It might just be the most underestimated white variety in the country.
