- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Vermentino is one of the emerging Italian white grape varieties that is proving very successful in Australia, and Jo once again sums it up perfectly: "It’s just such a great, accessible variety and I think a really good alternative to Sauv Blanc or Pinot G." As she told us, "it's all about picking at the right time with Vermy, you want those great ripe fruit flavours but also the acid to keep it fresh." There's some really clever winemaking in this, with wild yeasts, full solids, partial malo and lees stirring all adding subtly chewy texture to the pristine and pure fruit. Jo calls this wine 'The Versatile' and that's exactly what it is - great with food, great as a refreshing Summer white, great as a thought-provoking conversation starter.
What it Tastes Like
Love the nose. Lavender, river stones, with weight and an easy flow. It has a gentle creaminess which gives it a soft, pillowy feel. Juicy and full of tropical fruit flavour, a touch of citrus and a dainty herbal character. Such a slick wine - great all-rounder. Beautifully put together by Jo.
94 points. "Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, wild-fermented in stainless steel, matured on lees for 3 months with occasional stirring. Vermentino is definitely here to stay. It has a resolute character that comes through in cool and warm climates, albeit with a clear preference for cool to mild spots. The aftertaste welds together the citrus, spice and ginger notes of the bouquet and palate thanks to intense, refreshing acidity." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 92 points. "It’s crunchy, it’s textural, it’s floral and it’s lively with flavour. Which is another way of saying that this is an easy wine to recommend. Perfume hasn’t had this much power since Jana Wendt was on the throne. Wisps of woodsmoke make the allure that bit more compelling." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
Vermentino loved the warm dry conditions of the 2016 vintage and has produced a vibrant fruit driven style with great intensity and a lovely round mouthfeel

About the Producer
Billy Button is one of our favourite wineries. As Jo Marsh continues to expand her brilliant boutique range she continues to impress us to no end.
Her commitment to alternative varietals with amazing drinkability is one of the most charming aspects of her label. This combined with a ferocious passion for her home in the Alpine Valleys and the growers that produces there, makes Billy Button a one-of-a-kind.
The Alpine Valley is one of the ‘must watch’ emerging regions of Australian wine. Not bound by the traditions of some of the more ‘established’ regions, the Alpine Valley is experimenting with ‘alternative’ varieties from all over the world and kicking some huge goals. The productions are small, the quality is high and this cool climate region is on a mission to stamp its authority on Australian wine. And they are doing one hell of a job.
