- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Here we have Jo Marsh's 'The Feisty' Friulano, yet another alternative Italian variety doing cool things in her beloved Alpine Valleys. The grape originates from Friuli in North-East Italy, where it makes quite full-bodied and richly flavoured wines. There's only a handful of Friulano in Australia. This has all of that intensity and texture but like all of Jo's wines, they are so refreshing and seamlessly balanced. She says the fruit from 2016 was the best she's seen. And Jo's not afraid to try things with this hanging out on skins for 6 months before bottling. A remarkable amount of work has gone into this wine considering its tiny volumes and more than generous price. It's unique, so complex, so damn tasty. As Campbell Mattinson said, "You'd go this."
What it Tastes Like
"Golden colour. Extravagant aromatics. Honeysuckle and custard apples, ginger and nashi pear. It has power, it has texture, it has prettiness and it has interest, but mostly it has drinkability. You’d go this." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
90 points. "Golden colour. Extravagant aromatics. Honeysuckle and custard apples, ginger and nashi pear. It has power, it has texture, it has prettiness and it has interest, but mostly it has drinkability. You’d go this." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
The 2016 was a very hot, dry vintage and many of the traditional varieties struggled. Not so for Friulano, the fruit was the best I have seen it yet, golden berries packed with flavour and no disease - which is the biggest challenge with this variety. The fruit for this wine came from the Dalbosco vineyard in Porepunkah and was picked in 2 parcels, approx 2 weeks apart. The flavour of Friulano is mostly in the skins, so this wine had quite a bit of skin contact, with 25% fermented and held on skins for 6 months (hence the slightly golden colour). Fragrant aromas bely the intensity on the palate, a wine not for the faint-hearted.

About the Producer
Billy Button is one of our favourite wineries. As Jo Marsh continues to expand her brilliant boutique range she continues to impress us to no end.
Her commitment to alternative varietals with amazing drinkability is one of the most charming aspects of her label. This combined with a ferocious passion for her home in the Alpine Valleys and the growers that produces there, makes Billy Button a one-of-a-kind.
The Alpine Valley is one of the ‘must watch’ emerging regions of Australian wine. Not bound by the traditions of some of the more ‘established’ regions, the Alpine Valley is experimenting with ‘alternative’ varieties from all over the world and kicking some huge goals. The productions are small, the quality is high and this cool climate region is on a mission to stamp its authority on Australian wine. And they are doing one hell of a job.
