- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Riesling from the Best’s House Block was spectacularly good in 2016.
As such, winemaker Justin Purser opted to keep a small parcel separate to make a special “Kabinett” inspired Riesling.
This is the most intense of the Best’s Rieslings. A slight amount of residual sugar retained in the wine to lend a luscious texture and balance the formidable natural acidity found in the fruit from this 38-year-old vineyard.
There are few estates in this country that could produce such a Riesling in this style and of this quality. It’s only made in the best years, Riesling fans should buy with confidence.
What It Tastes Like
A choir of smells rise from the glass. There’s lemons and lime juice, flickers of bath salts, honey and sweet blossoms. The palate is glorious. Free-flowing, juicy, tight and succulent with steel and apples at the core. Acid provides the horse-power; the gentle sweetness, the comfortable ride. It has power and class, elegance and restraint. An Australian Riesling with a unique voice.
96 points “Planted ‘79 on alluvial gravels and clays over granite. The wine immediately captures the palate with the intensity and depth of its Bickford’s Lime Juice flavours; the acidity is part and parcel of the very long palate, and while there is abundant flavour to sustain immediate enjoyment, its best years are yet to come, its future unlimited.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Made from grapes sourced off our ‘House Block’ directly behind the winery. Planted in 1978, this block typically produces highly aromatic and delicately flavoured wines.

About the Producer
Best's Great Western
Best’s is one of the oldest owned family wineries in the country. They are famous for having a “nursery block” housing some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties anywhere in the world.
Their wines are consistently excellent and they have a vineyard which is envied by much of the wine growing world. With a rich history and an illustrious past, this Victorian icon is one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.
History runs deep in Great Western. Some of the country’s oldest, most iconic producers have made a home for themselves here in the far West of Victoria. Shiraz and Riesling are the region’s most iconic varieties, but if you dig a little deeper, amazing examples of Pinot Meunier and other alternative varieties are waiting to be found. These are warm climate wines that maintain class and prestige.
Riesling is the king of white grapes. With unparalleled versatility, it rightfully carries the ‘Noble’ name tag. We make extraordinary Riesling in Australia, from far and wide. From the classic searing, razor-sharp styles in the Clare and Eden Valleys to the fragrant and enchanting wines of the Great Southern, Australian Riesling is a chameleon that can take on many forms. Sweet, steely, lean or textured, the world of Riesling is a thing of wonder that should be explored by all true lovers of wine.
