- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Maiden voyage here for Conrad Pohlinger and his Adelaide Hills-based operation. The influence from his time spent with Brendan and Laura Carter comes through clear as a bell with the first release of his Gruner Veltliner. As well as some inspiration taken "from the riper, more textural styles of the Wachau." according to Conrad. This is not the classic 'line and length' Gru, this has a bit of texture, some richness and weight in the palate - reminiscent of some of the UZ Fianos perhaps - and it works an absolute treat with this variety. A slightly wild but deliciously enjoyable take on this Austrian variety.
What it Tastes Like
Well it doesn't look like Gruner, there's a yellowy tinge to the fruit. There's a waxiness from the time on skins. Spreads wide and thick though the mouth all chewy and delicious. A crispness to the end which keeps it clipping along at a good pace. It's about the mouthfeel with this wine. Some dried apple. Some lemon preserve. Some spice and herbs. Yum. Real surprise here.
ADD TO CART Variety: Grüner Veltliner Vintage: 2016 Region: Adelaide Hills Vineyard: Woodlands Ridge, Kenton Valley Soil: Sandy loam on clay Grüner originally hails from Austria but is showing some serious promise in the Adelaide Hills (thanks to Larry and Mark of Hahndorf Hill for bringing in the clones). A combination of warm days and cool nights cause the variety to develop flavour while retaining a natural high acidity, allowing the grape to be moulded harmoniously into a range of different styles. Ours took inspiration from the riper, more textural styles of the Wachau. The fruit was picked in mid-march, crushed, then left to relax overnight with the skins to gently extract flavour and build texture. Wild ferment occured in tank before being transferred to old French oak near the end of ferment. The wine was left to hibernate through the winter on lees (but no stirring), with half undergoing full malolactic. It was then racked and bottled unfiltered. Bottled Dec 2016. Texture for days.

About the Producer
Atwill’s is Conrad Pohlinger’s pet project. After working with Brendan & Laura Carter of Unico Zelo in the Adelaide Hills, he’s struck out on his own with a couple of eye-catching releases. The wines have a warmth and richness to them but with a freshness in toe. Small batches only made and little adjustments in the winery. Another exciting project to watch from the vibrant Adelaide Hills.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
