- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Dave Macintosh loves his Pinot Noir in all shades and colours. The thirst for a young, vibrant 'nouveau' style drove him to release this, the Spring Pinot Noir. For insane drinkability in a Pinot Noir, that's loaded with character, this is one of the tastiest of its style getting around. It does the job Dave wanted - its irresistible from first sip. Released while it's brimming with jubilant fruit, this will keep you coming back for more and more and more.
What it Tastes Like
Bouncy red fruits and a lift of Campari mixed with fresh spices. It's a puff of perfume and you can't help but swoon. Delicate, kitten tongue of tannin. Sweet/sour combo working in tandem. Smashing Pinot ready to rip into!
92 points "Yowsers, that’s some serious perfume. Big wafts of ripe cherries and clove/cinnamon spice. So strong in its scent, sweet, pretty, floral and fragrant. A wash of slick, spicy, gently sweet fruit washes through the palate. All about unadorned fruit, and perky freshness possible from pinot. So pure feeling. So very fresh. So very easy to like and drink. Bloody delicious stuff. Bistros and BBQs beware." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
Yarra Station, Coombe Farm and Willowlake vineyards. From three Yarra vineyards that have very distinct soil profiles and microclimates that span the breadth of the Valley. By blending the three vineyards we can create complexity and interest without winemaking interference. Hand harvested early in the morning to harness the fresh characters of the sites. The lower Yarra vineyards of Yarra Station and Coombe Farm had 100% carbonic wholebunch ferment while the Willowlake vineyard from the red soils of the Upper Yarra was destemmed and lightly stomped. All natural alcoholic and malolactic ferments. The vineyards were blended post pressing to mature in tank and old barrels to retain their freshness. Minimal sulphur just prior to going to bottle in early Spring with no fining or filtration.
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml
About the Producer
New Zealand born Dave Mackintosh is the head man at Arfion. After cutting his teeth at Oyster Bay, Dave settled in Victoria’s Yarra Valley and after working with Steve Flamsteed at Giant Steps, began his own brand Arfion: which means ‘Our Wine’ in Scottish Gaelic.
Dave is all about letting the fruit do the talking, guiding rather than forcing, constantly searching for the simplest way to get young, energetic wines into the bottle for people to enjoy. His Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are all effortless examples of wines made with a ‘less is more’ mentality. By working with some of the best growers in the Yarra Valley, Dave has put together a gorgeous range of wines that have interest and drinkability in spades.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
