- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
If you’re experimenting with new or alternative grape varieties in Australia, then the southern Italian Fiano variety is a very good place to start.
The grape performs extremely well in warm climates such as where this came from in South Australia’s Riverland region, and provides wines that are packed with flavour and texture and great with a wide range of foods.
Brad Wehr’s Amato Vino label is going from strength to strength and this new 2016 Fiano release is a ripper. Once again coming from the renowned Ricca Terra Farms vineyard, it has everything you want in good everyday-drinking Fiano at a very reasonable price. Only 100 dozen made.
Fiano is here to stay!
What It Tastes Like
The nose is bright and lifted, withs hints of nuts, honey, and gentle stone fruits underneath. The palate is all about texture - it’s a mouth-filling little number with peaches an cream flavours and hints of toast. Zippy acidity freshens everything up, with a bit of tannic grip on closing too. Not hugely complex but interesting and good drinking.
2015 vintage: 92 points. “Nondescript bouquet but the palate has weight and texture. The mid-palate is where the action is at but there’s a kick of apple, grapefruit and citrus to the finish; an entirely positive finale.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
A new one from the Ricca Terra Farms home property. Fiano is a grape found commonly in southern Italy (Campania) and Sicily. Small berries, thick skins and low yields make this variety and expensive one for growers. Renowned for it’s strong colour, flavours and aromas (honey, spice, florals and nuts) it is fast becoming a favourite in Australia’s bars. 100 dozen only.

Fiano is one of the most promising emerging white varieties in Australia. It’s a variety that likes to be warm and dry, exactly the kind of variety that is perfectly sustainable in Australia. Characterised by fresh fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and a lovely, slightly waxy mouthfeel, Fiano is a variety that is prospering across the country.
