- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Saperavi is a variety rarely seen in Australia, but it certainly has potential. Here we see the variety at full pace. Made by the skilled hands of Alex Russell, as he notes, this is "The beast in the Alejandro range." This is a full throttle, flavour packed, full bodied red, primed for a good steak and a long chat with an old friend. Bored of reaching for Shiraz or Cabernet any time you want a wine with some guts? Well, shake things up with this Saperavi.
What it Tastes Like
Impenetrable colour. All black fruit, blueberry and licorice. Roasted beetroot and some cherry liqueur. So much power packed into the frame. Big, muscular tannins that somehow don't feel over blown. It's a big wine with a big personality. Interesting stuff.
Harvested earlier than previous years the 2016 Saperavi wasn't dripping with blue berry during ferment, it rather went through a blue berry to freshly peeled potato stage. Known for its capacity to be earthy, geosmin like (smells like rain) this wine is dark purple with dark fruits and potato skin and earth character. Fleshed out with rich, toasted French and American oak this Saperavi is more elegant than past rocket fuel vintages.

About the Producer
Alex Russell Wines
Alex Russell is on a mission to make the best value, premium versions of alternative varieties in the country. From his home in the Riverlands region, he’s making a very good fist of it. His wines consistently over-deliver and have been very successful on the competitive wine show circuit. Top value with interest to boot.
The sky is the limit for the new look Riverlands. Known historically as a place for producing bulk wine grapes, there is plenty of exploration happening in this region. It is the ideal place to trial new varieties for the country, the warm dry climate suiting many Mediterranean varieties to a tee.
