Ah Cabernet Franc, how good you can be... When handled right, like this little bad boy out of the Punt Road stable. The Airlie Bank range is a little gem. Smart winemaking, good fruit, value well above its price point. The Franc this year sees 100% whole bunches. Don't let that freak you out, this is stellar drinking for the dollars. Softer and more seductive than Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a classic example of as Max Allen observed " a global trend towards drinking lighter, younger red wines." Gary Walsh was well impressed by this release, giving it 91 points saying "... for pleasure and drinking appeal, it’s still a winner." This is a drinkers and a thinkers wine. Juicy, succulent and super moreish, this is one of those great "go-to" reds with a bit of interest.
What it Tastes Like
"Spicy, packed with juicy redcurrant and blackcurrant, and a pleasing weed, floral and hedgerow perfume. Light to medium bodied, fruity and savoury and stalky all at once, light rasp of tannin, raspberry juice and spice aftertaste. I’m not sure it’s quite as good as the 2015, but for pleasure and drinking appeal, it’s still a winner." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
Punt Road are one of the movers and shakers of the Yarra Valley. With a focus on premium quality and more than reasonable pricing, these guys have amassed a great cult following. Tim Shand is the winemaker and his creativity and skill are the perfect matches for the stunning fruit yielded off the Punt Road Estate in Coldstream Hills.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
C’Franc, as it is affectionately know, is often one of the more overlooked varieties from the Bordeaux region. Traditionally used as mainly a blending variety, this grape has been experiencing somewhat of a reinvigoration lately as more and more producers recognise its potential to create highly aromatic, crunchy and delectable reds in its own right.
