- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Adelina are kicking some serious goals as of late.
Their stylish packaging, the amazing old vine fruit they utilise, the ‘house style’ of the wines, all coming up trumps for this Clare Valley duo. Their recent reviews reflect this, the new releases seem to have gone to the next level. Good on them. Their Grenache fits squarely in the ‘new wave’ of Grenache sweeping the Australian wine industry. This is a finer boned, more delicate and complex style of Grenache.
The fruit from Block 2 on this stunning 80+-year-old vineyard on their estate is left on skins for 50 days in concrete vats prior to pressing to neutral barrels. This extracts maximum character from the fruit in its purest form.
Freshness and age worthiness reign supreme here. As Mike Bennie described it in his cracking 95 point review as “A superb example of grenache at the apex. Wonderful drinking.”. We love this style of Grenache, it is the future of the variety in this country and this one is mixing it with the best.
What It Tastes Like
“This is seriously good. Pinot lovers will like the lithe frame of the wine, nebbiolo fanciers will go for the tannin here. It’s pungent in cranberry, rose water, raspberry jelly and a flourish of briar/dried herbs. Just under medium weight, the wine pools in the palate with clear, bright berry-soft jammy fruit flavours, ribbons of al dente tannins, amaro-like acidity. Long, detailed, delicious. A superb example of grenache at the apex. Wonderful drinking.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
Col McBryde and Jennie Gardner are Adelina. A pair of smart cookies, each rocking a PhD in microbiology and between them some pretty serious winemaking chops. Together, they have formed one of the Clare Valley’s most exciting wineries. From what was a small operation that began in 2002, slowly but surely the Adelina brand has been picking up steam.
There is a delicacy and purity inherent in every wine they produce. From opulent old vine Shiraz and Mataro, to one of the country’s most excellent Nebbiolo and a set of scintillating Rieslings, there is a sense of class and refinement to the whole project. These meticulously crafted, beautifully presented wines are just a joy to drink.
The Clare Valley knows what it does, and does it very, very well. Riesling and Shiraz are the rockstars of the region and with some of the most famous wines in the county coming from this small pocket of SA, the Clare’s reputation for quality only grows year on year.
Grenache is the great sleeping giant of Australian red wine. We are the custodians of the oldest producing Grenache vines in the world, some ancient vineyards planted as far back as the 1850’s. Modern Australian Grenache is a different beast to the wines of yesteryear, they are more youthful and vibrant, showing bright red fruit characters, silky tannins and a delicious array of spices. With the viticultural resources we have at our disposal in this country, Australia can be one of the world’s leading producers of this variety, making wines that easily rival the best of Europe.
