- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Yangarra GSM is a class act. This single vineyard wine from the stunning Yangarra estate in Kangarilla sets a high bar for all others in the region.
Winemaker Peter Fraser has focused his attentions on producing the country’s finest iterations of Rhone varieties and this is arguably his best version of this classic blend to date.
The dizzying aromatics and succulent fruit of Grenache meets the plum/choc combo of McLaren Vale Shiraz and the grunt of Mourvedre. This is the quintessential McLaren Vale red.
What It Tastes Like
Flavour bomb of sweet oak, molten chocolate and raspberry coolee with a backbeat of earth, licorice and spice. It’s got great balance of fruit and structure. The tannins and fine, grainy and moreish. The main theme is Grenache with its purple berry lift and violet notes. It’s a baby at the moment, its best is yet to come but no doubt about quality. Nailed it.
95 points “One of the noticeable traits about Yangarra’s wines, GSM in particular, there’s nothing harsh or worked, there’s a purity of fruit that comes through, the balance of tannins to acidity, and this not shy with the latter. The right amount of spice and flavour and most importantly, crafting a really, delicious drink.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
91 points. “It’s a nice thing to drink, easy thing to drink, feels smooth, even and tidy-ish in its components. That being said, oak peeks out a bit in old spice cupboard, pencil shavings and twigginess in perfume and palate, but there’s just about enough dark fruit, Xmas cake dried fruits and spice and earthiness to move things along. Just medium weight, finishes a touch short with smudged dusty tannins. Again, nice drink.”

About the Producer
Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!
They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. For reds, Grenache is their flag bearer, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. His takes on Viognier are as good as any in the land. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block. A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
