Woods Crampton - once again challenging Barossa Valley convention with this smashable and completely unique red. Their 'Sleeping Dogs' is an eclectic blend of Bonvedro, Mataro, and Graciano, which is built for easy drinking with a point of difference. The fruit is picked and vinified separately, aged briefly in only older French oak with around 20% whole bunches adding extra depth and interest. There is nothing else like this in the Barossa - a dangerously drinkable red full of spice and bright fruit. Very interesting and very, very tasty. Top value for the more adventurous Barossa fan.
What it Tastes Like
"Exotic spice, salt beef, dried cherries and strawberries, sage and earth. Medium bodied, smooth plush tannin, a saline and spicy edge, plush red and black fruit, that sage stuffing flavour coming through, and plush velour-like tannin on a good finish. Good stuff." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Sourced from three vineyards – Mataro from the 80 year-old Marschall Vineyard in Vine Vale, Bonvedro from the 70 year-old John’s Vineyard in Light Pass and the Graciano from the 9 year old Cowham Vineyard in Light Pass. The 2015 vintage on the eastern slopes of the Barossa Valley was outstanding. Good soil moisture allowed the vines to weather the warm, dry summer before late rains refreshed the vines before cooler conditions allowed a long, even ripening. Each variety is vinified separately as part of the single varietal releases. Typically cold soaked before cool fermentation in small one and two tonne open fermenters with hand plunging and 15-25% whole bunch inclusion. Matured in medium and large seasoned oak before blending and bottling with fining.

About the Producer
Woods Crampton is a young and energetic brand quickly making a big name for themselves out of the Barossa. Essentially a two man operation, their range is a mix of traditional Barossa and some obscure Mediterranean varieties. “Hands off” wines at a great price.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
