- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Woods Crampton wines are exclusively sourced from top quality vineyards in the Barossa Valley and made with restraint. Nicholas Crampton's aim is to produce "contemporary and balanced wines, a world away from the jammy fruit bombs of the past." With only a handful of vintages under the belt, the label is excelling. Their value for money is tough to match. Case in point is their 2015 Woods Crampton Mataro. Made from 80-year-old vines on the Marschall vineyard in the Barossa, this is sensational value for money. Medium bodied, distinctly varietal and oh so drinkable, this is an absolute no-brainer for any lover of Mataro or the Barossa in general. With a colossal 97 points from James Halliday, this is one of the best value varietal Mataro's in the country.
What it Tastes Like
"Dried herbs rolled in honey, a whiff of liquorice and spice, boysenberry and blackberry. Medium bodied, fresh and trim, with a lick of light tannin, clean acidity, a mix of wild berries and meat rolled with herbs Finish is savoury, precise and quite long. Delicious already, though should improve." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
97 points "The 80yo vineyard has 5% grenache sprinkled through it, hand-picked and sorted, 25% whole bunches, wild yeast open-fermented, 30 days on skins, matured for 15 months in medium and large French oak (10% new), 200 dozen made. Excellent colour, and from this point on you know you're onto something special. It is strikingly elegant for a wine with intense purple and black fruits, tannins barely raising a ripple to disturb the surface." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 92+ points. "In quite a short period of time, these wines from Woods Crampton have become something of a staple for the well informed buyer. Dried herbs rolled in honey, a whiff of liquorice and spice, boysenberry and blackberry. Medium bodied, fresh and trim, with a lick of light tannin, clean acidity, a mix of wild berries and meat rolled with herbs Finish is savoury, precise and quite long. Delicious already, though should improve." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Sourced exclusively from the Marschall vineyard, a eighty year old organic and dry-grown vineyard, planted on its own rootstocks to clones unknown, in the Vine Vale district. The loose sandy soils reflect sunlight and are well suited to Mataro. The 2015 vintage on the eastern slopes of the Barossa Valley was outstanding. Good soil moisture allowed the vines to weather the warm, dry summer before late rains refreshed the vines before cooler conditions allowed a long, even ripening. Made using Burgundian techniques and a “hands-off” philosophy. The fruit is hand-picked and sorted before a cold-soak for five days at seven degrees. The fruit is primarily de-stemmed and split into small one and two-tonne fermenters with around fifteen percent whole bunches laid across the bottom. Hand plunged twice daily and allowed to ferment totally dry before pressing in a very old very gentle pneumatic press and racking to old large format oak (four hundred and eighty litre). Not racked or stirred for 15 months. Bottled without fining and minimal sulphur addition.

About the Producer
Woods Crampton is a young and energetic brand quickly making a big name for themselves out of the Barossa. Essentially a two man operation, their range is a mix of traditional Barossa and some obscure Mediterranean varieties. “Hands off” wines at a great price.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
