Tempranillo is an amazing grape, and one that is rightfully exploding across Australia. One of the big things it has going for it is it versatility. 'Temp' can take on many personas, from the serious and intense to something more like this... Tinta is Kerri Thompsons take on a 'Joven' style of Tempranillo. It is bright and bouncy with only a small portion of the wine seeing any (old) oak. The focus is on the fresh berry flavours and the interesting spices that can be naturally derived driectly from the variety. A little boost to the tannins and mid palate weight comes in the form of 10% Mataro, but ultimately this is just a great example of Tempranillo in its purest form.
What it Tastes Like
Bursting with berry compote smells, a little herbal note underpinning it all. It jumps right out of the glass at you. It's so fresh, with some lovely sweet berry flavours, a twist of licorice and long spicy finish. Super moreish. Drink now. Drink deep.

I’m passionate about the township of Watervale 5452 and am working with dry grown, sustainably farmed vineyards in the area. With gentle care from grapegrower to winemaker, working with both organic and biodynamic principles, it’s my intention to produce wines with drinkability and personality. tinta by KT is wild fermented in open fermenters and sent straight to tank and only a small percentage spending a short time in oak. This is an early (and easy) drinking tempranillo made in a style the Spanish call ‘Joven’ (lit. youthful). Our hand picking and careful bunch selection from the 2014 vintage has produced great reward. Kerri Thompson’s laser-like winemaking focus is gaining her a big reputation. Rather than spread her talents far and wide, she has zeroed in on two of her favourite vineyards in the Clare Valley and she is drilling down into them. The wines have a specificity which is refreshing, she is trying to tell the complete story of a small part of the Clare with a limited palate of four varieties - Riesling being the main focus. The wines she is producing are wonderfully detailed and of the highest class.
The Clare Valley knows what it does, and does it very, very well. Riesling and Shiraz are the rockstars of the region and with some of the most famous wines in the county coming from this small pocket of SA, the Clare’s reputation for quality only grows year on year.
Tempranillo is a hot-blooded Spanish variety that has found a happy home in many Australian wine regions. Typically, Tempranillo will be medium bodied, showing silky darker fruits and tannins riddled with exotic spices. The wines are more-ish and incredibly well suited to alfresco Australian dining. Unsurprisingly, Tempranillo is one of the country’s most popular emerging varieties and is set to have a big future on Australian shores.
