Beechworth’s reputation for top-flight Chardonnay is well earned. The region has produced some insanely powerful Chardonnays over the past decade or more.
Willem Kurt’s owner/winemaker Daniel Balzer has perhaps reigned in a little of that power with his newest release of Chardonnay but left none wanting in flavour.
This is a great modern example of the direction of the region. It has length and intensity without leaning too heavily on oak. It maintains freshness with deliciousness above all.
With 93 points from Gary Walsh, this is one for lovers of the variety. Truly, one of the best value wines we’ve seen from the region.
What It Tastes Like
“It’s juicy and slightly spicy biscuity with nectarine and citrus flavours, and a subtle mint perfume above. Light to medium bodied, smooth and gentle, some crunchy grapefruity acidity in with the cashew creaminess, and a clean finish of good length. Lovely to drink. Nicely done.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
93 points “Three vintages in, and I’d say this is the best Chardonnay release to date.

2015 was an excellent vintage in North East Victoria, and I am really excited about this Chardonnay. I feel it sits in the middle from a style perspective. A firm structure with generosity and complexity.

About the Producer
Willem Kurt wines are sourced from various sites around the Alpine Valleys in Northeast Victoria, and are put together by experienced winemaker Daniel Balzer. The name ‘Willem Kurt’ comes from combining the middle names of his two sons. It’s very much a boutique, family-owned-and-run affair. The focus is on Shiraz, Chardonnay and excitingly, high quality Vermentino.
Beechworth is a small wine producing region with a big reputation. The distinctive terroir in this part of the country produces some of our most iconic wines. If you want serious Chardonnay or Rhone-inspired Shiraz/Syrah, you want to get to know Beechworth. Some of the most powerful cool climate wines in the country hail from here, and some of our future stars are making it their home. The future looks very bright for this champion Victorian region.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
