Brendan and Laura Carter from Unico Zelo are never ones to follow the rules, so it comes as little surprise to see them release what is a pretty serious Merlot, of all things. As Brendan put to us, "It's the one variety that doesn't conform with what we do... and we take a bit of an Italian spin on it." Far from the over-ripe, poorly thought out Merlots of yesteryear, this comes from a specialist Merlot vineyard in the Adelaide Hills and is grown and made with love. A real surprise packet!
What it Tastes Like
Nothing like the simple, jammy Merlots of the past, this is bright, fresh and super perfumed with jubey blue and back fruits. The palate has a core of juicy plums and blackcurrants, with refreshing acidity and chewy tannins on close. A different Merlot for sure but delicious.

Formerly known at Black Swan - we found this name more fitting. Always loved, but never admitted - Merlot is one variety we'll always continue to craft. From a clay-loam site, peppered with quartz in Lobethal, established in the early 1990s, this is a specialist Merlot vineyard - and a wine with love to surprise people with! Firm texture and herbaceous vibes!

About the Producer
Unico Zelo is the project of winemaking couple Brendan and Laura Carter. In their words, their aim is to create “Italian-inspired, textural and site-expressive wines” and “Australian examples of Mediterranean varieties in an approachable and jovial fashion.”
Since bursting onto the scene in 2014 with their eye-catching, outrageously good value alternative vino, the Carters have spread their wings and their range. They now make a large suite of wines, including single vineyard examples of Fiano, Nero d’Avola and Nebbiolo. They are one of the most dynamic winemaking duos in the Adelaide Hills.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
