This bristling young Chardonnay comes from new Adelaide Hills producer Turon White.
“I produce small quantities of Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chardonnay. I source each variety from different sub-regions of the Adelaide Hills. Each carefully chosen to suit the elegant style of wine I aim to produce.”
His first release of the Chardonnay is classical in style. Chardonnay is picked by hand from a vineyard in Piccadilly, whole bunches are squished through a basket press then regular lees stirring occurs over its nine months in barrel.
The resultant wine is toasty yet fresh, or as Mike Bennie put it in his 93 point review, “Refreshing chardonnay on point.”
What It Tastes Like
“Melons and stone fruit, kind of buttery sniff but segues to ginger and spice. Palate has that brisk acidity with a lick of slippery texture. Marries that old school richness with a brisk, crisp tang that keeps you perky and diving back to the glass. Like that chalky tang to finish too. Refreshing chardonnay on point.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
93 points. “New, younger generation producer, for me at least. Hand picked, natural ferment, goes to wood for nine months. Good place (Piccadilly Valley) in the Adelaide Hills for chardonnay, it seems.

Hand-picked in the Piccadilly Valley. Whole bunch pressed. Wild fermented. Matured in French oak for 9 months. Partial malo lactic fermentations. Regular battonage. Tight crisp citrus acid line, light touch of French oak, lifted nutty and honeyed flavours from regular battonage.

About the Producer
Turon White is a young, articulate and intelligent winemaker - the kind we need more of in this country. His mission to drill down, not only into variety and region but the sub-region, the site and the clone is one that is ahead of the curve in much of the Australian wine industry. With only a few vintages under his belt with the Turon label so far, the future seems bright for this great new Adelaide Hills talent.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
