- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
"Typically, this is extraordinary value." says Mike Bennie on the Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz. The 2015 vintage does not disappoint. This is right in the sweet-spot for the Barossa lover. It's ripe but balanced, the focus on the luscious fruit the region is famous for rather than oak. There aren't many Barossa wines that compete with this for value for money. Barossa fans should buy with confidence.
What it Tastes Like
"Lip-smacking goodness. Barossa on blast. Dark berry fruits, a waft of Christmas pudding, fresh lathed wood-oak, sweet spices in the bouquet. The palate is more fuller-medium weight than hefty, rich and sweet in fruit, fine in sandy tannins, fresh-feeling through the finish. It drinks and drinks and drinks. No need to hold back. Put it on your to-do list." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
92 points. "Typically, this is extraordinary value. Dials in a good amount of Barossa heartiness for the bucks, but without clobbering you or showing much out of form. Lip-smacking goodness. About the Producer
With a family history steeped in European custom, the wines of Dominic Torzi are made in a traditional, low-interventionist way. Grown and hand picked on their cool, marginal site on the cusp of Barossa and Eden Valley, these are refined and honest wines crafted with a European sensibility. With an array of alternate varieties as well as the traditional Barossa staples, the Torzi Matthews wines are some of the most interesting and best value in the region.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
