This 100+-year-old vineyard in the Moppa sub-region of the Barossa Valley has been managed now by Domenic Torzi for the last decade. It makes the flagship wine in the Torzi Matthews range.
Domenic treats this vineyard as his own, handling the vineyard traditionally with the use of natural sprays and encouraging native grass cover between rows. This is an excellent Barossa Shiraz.
Fermented as 40% whole bunches and basket pressed to top quality oak, bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a true and pure representation of this great old vineyard.
Gary Walsh awarded this 94 points and noted that, “Fanciers of more savoury expressions of Barossa Shiraz should take a look.”
What It Tastes Like
“Spicy and saucy, blackberries and salted beef, slight floral and mint perfume: oak is low, fruit intensity is high. Medium bodied, all blackberry and blackcurrant, crisp acidity, firm dense packed tannin, lashings of spice and saline mineral stuff, grip and juicy boysenberry on a long finish. It’s kind of bold and understated at once, if that makes any sense. Fanciers of more savoury expressions of Barossa Shiraz should take a look.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
97 points “113yo dry grown vines at Moppa Hill yielding 1.2 tonnes per acre, hand-picked, open, wild fermentation, matured for 14 months in French oak 10% new. A wonderful wine from a very old vineyard made with sensitivity, keeping all the focus on the fruit, not the oak or the tannins. The decision to use 40% whole bunches was inspired, injecting a perfume to the bouquet and freshness to a palate that is no more than medium-bodied.”

About the Producer
With a family history steeped in European custom, the wines of Dominic Torzi are made in a traditional, low-interventionist way. Grown and hand picked on their cool, marginal site on the cusp of Barossa and Eden Valley, these are refined and honest wines crafted with a European sensibility. With an array of alternate varieties as well as the traditional Barossa staples, the Torzi Matthews wines are some of the most interesting and best value in the region.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
