- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This delightful Grenache was inspired by winemaker Ben Chipman’s time abroad.
“I got the idea from my time in Europe where people were always drinking from caraffs. It inspired me to make really pure and primal wines that we can drink here.”
It’s a lighter shade of Barossa Grenache, built with purity of fruit and freshness in mind.
The wine sees a little whole bunch ferment (30%) but little oak, half the wine saw only stainless, the other half only old French hogsheads. Campbell Mattinson labelled it “Excellent drinking” which we totally agree with.
This is Barossa Grenache with vitality at its core. A wine for knocking back without a second thought.
What It Tastes Like
Simple but delightful would sum this up nicely. It’s all raspberried and cherry cola/sarsaparilla notes. Crunchy, vibrant tannins, with a laid-back feel. Huge crowd pleaser on our hands here. Happy wine for feel good times.
91 points. “Wild-fermented with a portion of whole bunches. Low in oak (indeed mostly matured in stainless steel). It’s fresh and nervous but it works. The fruit has a sweet-sour aspect, the flavours buoyant with fruit but flecked with earth and spice. Leathery notes add a softness. It’s not deep in colour or flavour but it’s tasty and delicious.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
90 points “Open fermented, wild yeast, some whole bunches, then basket pressed into (mostly) stainless steel, with some going into older oak. Released (very) young.
It’s light in colour and not at all deep, in terms of sheer fruit intensity, but it works with the variety rather than against it. This is an excellent way to serve grenache. Cherries, sweet and sour, with spice, earth and leather-like aspects. Fresh but vinous. Perfumed. Nice price. Nice wine. Excellent drinking.”
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
The old adage, “If youth only knew; if age only could” has been attributed to many great thinkers. With each passing generation, a legacy of wisdom is passed down from the old guard to the next crop; the gift of knowledge from those who know how, to those who can. The Young Blood Shiraz is our dedication to those who paved the way for our future, and our commitment to doing the same when the time comes.
Inspired by the new wave ‘Vino Joven’ wines of the old world, Young Blood Grenache is released as a cheeky youngster with just a brief barrel maturation to showcase structure and varietal character, while retaining freshness and finesse. The fruit is open fermented utilising native yeasts, with 30% whole bunch in the mix. After 7 days maceration post-ferment, the wine is gently basket pressed and racked to stainless vats (50%) and old French oak hogsheads (50%) for 6 months maturation. Young Blood Grenache is pure, uncomplicated enjoyment.

About the Producer
Ben “Chippy” Chipman and Toby “Yappy” Yap are the fools of Tomfoolery.
Their brand is built on a simple philosophy: “small parcels of fruit, hand-crafted through a simple and relatively non-interventional approach with the aim to truly reflect the individual characteristics of the vineyard and variety. Tomfoolery wines are made with old world simplicity in a new world of wine.”
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
Grenache is the great sleeping giant of Australian red wine. We are the custodians of the oldest producing Grenache vines in the world, some ancient vineyards planted as far back as the 1850’s. Modern Australian Grenache is a different beast to the wines of yesteryear, they are more youthful and vibrant, showing bright red fruit characters, silky tannins and a delicious array of spices. With the viticultural resources we have at our disposal in this country, Australia can be one of the world’s leading producers of this variety, making wines that easily rival the best of Europe.
