- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Cabernet/Shiraz partnership is one that is unique to Australia. This classic wine style has deep roots in the Barossa Valley. Here, winemaker Ben Chipman pays homage to the pioneering winemakers of the past who paved the way for the current generation of Barossa winemakers. "The classic Barossa ‘Claret’ is the marrying of our region’s great varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. From an early age we learnt to appreciate and respect this traditional Barossa wine style as a true example of varietal harmony." It's a robust wine of deep-set fruit and suede-like feel. Rich and opulent, this is a modern tip of the cap to the great wines of Australia's past.
What it Tastes Like
Toasty, chocolatey, clovey blackerries. It's warm and round, with luxurious fruit. Such a punter-friendly wine style. Barossa Valley writ large. Classic red that will make lots of friends.
2015 Son of a Gun Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz – Barossa Valley This is a dedication to the favourite Barossa blend of the old guns, from their proud sons. The classic Barossa ‘Claret’ is the marrying of our region’s great varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. From an early age we learnt to appreciate and respect this traditional Barossa wine style as a true example of varietal harmony. The fruit is handpicked at optimum ripeness and flavour profile ensuring overall balance before being gently destemmed to keep as many whole berries and then open fermented for a minimum of five days with the juice being pumped over the skins twice daily to maximize oxygenation and purity of fermentation. Once the wine is dry it is then gently basket pressed minimizing the extraction of harsh extractive tannins. Matured for 12 months in seasoned French oak barriques. Colour: Rich purple. Bouquet: Intense Shiraz brambles with a herbal Cabernet lift. Palate: We love a good ‘Barossa Claret’, and that’s precisely what we’ve got here. Ripe, supple Shiraz with a lovely Cebernet backbone, satisfyingly full-flavoured. Great with rich gamey flavours – preferably game you’ve shot yourself, of course!
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml
About the Producer
Ben “Chippy” Chipman and Toby “Yappy” Yap are the fools of Tomfoolery.
Their brand is built on a simple philosophy: “small parcels of fruit, hand-crafted through a simple and relatively non-interventional approach with the aim to truly reflect the individual characteristics of the vineyard and variety. Tomfoolery wines are made with old world simplicity in a new world of wine.”
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
