The Kiss is the flagship Shiraz for local Hunter Valley winemaking legend Andrew Thomas.
It once again comes from the Pokolbin Estate Vineyard, planted back in 1969. Year in, year out, this produces the best Shiraz at Thommo’s disposal. This gorgeous wine typifies the style of Shiraz the Hunter has become famous for; perfumed, medium-to-full bodied and savoury.
The 2014 vintage sold out in a matter of weeks. The 2015 is a little more tempered in style, more medium bodied than the last, but it looks fantastic in the glass. Thommo describes it as a “coilled spring of a wine, full of energy and tension.”
If you’re a fan of Hunter Valley reds or just high-quality Shiraz in general, then the Thomas Kiss Shiraz is simply a must try.
What It Tastes Like
Perfumed version of Hunter here. Blueberry and new leather, wet black earth. It’s quietly composed. Real energy in the palate. Pure fruited and an easy grace. Goes long in flavour with a web of fine, tight-knit tannin. Beautiful wine.
Winemakers Comments Kiss Shiraz is a cheeky name for a serious wine. It is an individual vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz, grown on the tough clay/loam soils of the Pokolbin Estate vineyard (planted 1969). These naturally low cropping vines consistently produce fruit with exceptional depth and concentration. This is the benchmark Shiraz for Thomas Wines, expressing very the best qualities of each vintage. The first vintage of Kiss Shiraz was in 2001, and since that time, each vintage has received countless wine show awards and accolades. The 2015 Hunter vintage has yielded some fantastic red wines, certainly enjoyable in their youth and the best will be regarded as classics in years to come. The grapes were hand picked on the 18th of February, cold soaked for 48 hours and then fermented on skins for about seven days. The wine was then matured for 16 months exclusively in premium French oak barriques. After bottling, the wine rested in the cellar for ten months prior to being released 6th May, 2017. Tasting Notes A benchmark Hunter Shiraz displaying a delightfully deep and vibrant purple hue. Definitely in the medium bodied spectrum, but flush with concentrated dark blue fruits, savoury spice and a long, satiny tannin structure which encapsulates the wine in its entirety. The internal core of this wine clearly demonstrates that Hunter shiraz can achieve amazing intensity within a medium bodied frame. Drink 2017 – 2030+

Andrew Thomas is one of the modern day legends of the Hunter Valley.
