- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
It took a little convincing, but winemaker Rory Lane managed to the grower at Westgate vineyard into getting rid of some old Cabernet in place of three rows of Marsanne, and one each of Roussanne and Viognier. It was a gamble, to be sure. Rhone white blends are loved by a niche nowhere near the extent of Cabernet. Thankfully, for all concerned, the gamble paid off. This is the sixth release of this blend, and it's a cracker. The fruit is all picked, crushed and fermented together. By doing loads of barrel work, lees stirring, and allowing the juice to all go through malolactic fermentation, Rory has souped this wine up to the max. It's rich and full flowing with cleansing purity at its core. This will be loved by those who enjoy whites with some punch.
What it Tastes Like
Super nutty, caramel popcorn and banana split. Slippery palate. Juicy texture. Has a nice line of acid through the mouth which keeps the focus. It has a warming feel to it. Toasty and a touch honeyed. Yummy.
Grown at Westgate Vineyard, site of some of our best Shiraz grapes. We convinced the owner to pull out cabernet and plant 3 rows of Marsanne and one each of Roussanne and Viognier. Crazily, it is the only Marsanne and Roussanne in the region. 2015 is only the sixth vintage of this wine, and again all varieties were picked and pressed together, settled overnight and then racked to and allowed to ferment with wild yeasts in very old French puncheons and barriques. The wine was allowed to complete malolactic fermentation, which I think makes the wine more vinous, delicate and less fruity. Almost paradoxically the malo contributes to the ‘transparency’ and ‘unforced’ feel of the wine without sacrificing line. It is held on gross lees for a full 11 months, and is neither cold stabilised nor fined in any way. It’s a mellifluous, light to mid-weight style with a gentle grip to close. Delicious young but should be great at 5 years. Despite my fears in 2007 that this type of blend would be a commercial disaster, it is now an eagerly awaited wine that seems to sell out quickly!
