Demi is a mid-weight Shiraz with loads of character from four vineyards across Heathcote. An excellent 2015 vintage has resulting in a beaut of a wine - Adam reckons it may be his best Demi yet.
A terrific introduction to a hugely exciting Victorian winemaker, and as far as Heathcote Shiraz goes this as good value as any!
What It Tastes Like
“Deep dark crimson in colour with bright purple hue. Intense perfume of lifted black olives, Asian spice, ground coffee beans, turned earth and bright cool dark fruits, think black currants and crushed black cherries. The palate shows classic Heathcote ‘terrior’ of savory dried herbs and spice, graphite and tapenade, with very fine tannin, balanced dark fruits leading though a long savoury finish. More concentrated than previous Demi’s, it’s all about fruit weight meeting tannin. The natural acidity keeps the wine fresh and alive.” - Adam Foster

That is my prediction. Working off an already high base, the future looks exciting. Here’s shiraz he sources from elsewhere for now, but it’s cooler in its expression of Heathcote anyway. This is his best yet under this ‘Demi’ release.
Loaded with spice, it’s a sinewy, chompy shiraz of medium bodied feel and red-black swirls of berry fruit. The scents are feral, in a sweet fruit-meets-wet earth-meets-undergrowth kind of way. The palate gnarls and twists, snaps with tannin and leaves you licking your chops for remnants of up front sweeter fruit character. It’s big, but not big, but striking, and yet shows deft touch in letting fruit do its thing. I want more.”

2015 Demi by Syrahmi is a blend of 4 vineyards across Heathcote. The largest component is from Paul & Simon Osicka 1960 to 1970 planted vines on sandy loams. Next in line is from the Shelmerdine Tooborac vineyards “The Springs and The Flat” granite based soil and to round off the blend is the Chalmers fruit from rich Cambrian red soils in the North.
The summer was dry and warm but not extreme with very cool nights. Picking was early, starting 21st February with extremely good colours, high natural acidity and bright flavours. Excellent vintage very much like the richer 2013 but with more power.

Adam Foster loves Heathcote.
He loves the ancient soils, the climate, the fruit that grows in the area. This is his personal label that focuses on individual parcels of fruit from some of the most idiosyncratic vineyards in the region. This is Adam at his best.
Heathcote’s reputation is for big Shiraz. And they do it so well. But the times they are a changin’ with Italian varieties such as Fiano, Sangiovese, Nero d’Avola and Sagrantino all finding themselves well at home in the ancient Cambrian soils.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
