- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
As winemaker Tom Ward continues to dig into the characters of his vineyard, his expressions of Chardonnay, in particular, continue to become more and more articulate. The latest release of the D Block Chardonnay is sublime. It captures the purity of fruit and elegance that is possible in Orange Chardonnay. This block, which once upon a time was contracted by Penfolds for their Yattana, is known for its ability to maintain acid whilst getting to full ripeness. The wine itself is streamlined and sleek. The perfect snapshot of a great vintage and a great site.
What it Tastes Like
Smells clean, drinks clear as a bell. Nice, long mineral-driven palate. White peach and blossom characters. It's crisp but plenty powerful. Tasty, classy, long and elegant Chardonnay.
93 points. "Spicy oak over green apple and tangy citrus. Has a lean palate and crisp coolness to feel. There's plenty of Chardonnay personality here, and the wine opens nicely with time to soften and reveal more. This is good gear." - Mike Bennie (WBM Magazine)

Upon fermentation, the wine was matured in a combination of new and older, tightly grained French oak for 9 months. Colour: Pale straw yellow with a slight green youthful hue. Aroma: Complex and attractive aromas of stonefruit, and citrus with lemon pith and subtle integrated oak. Palate: This is a fine textured and elegant cool climate Chardonnay with a long, linear acid structure surrounded by fleshy white peach and stone fruit flavours. Cellaring: Enjoy upon release and over the next ten years.

About the Producer
Swinging Bridge is one of Orange’s most exciting boutique producers. Owned by Tom Ward, who also heads up the New South Wales Wine Association, they are pumping out some fantastic cool climate wines, that all punch well above their weight.
The wine scene in Orange is alive and kicking. With each vintage that passes the bar of quality is raised again and again. Pinot Noir is a potential champion for the region but for now Shiraz, Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet are the flag bearers. The cool climate and the high altitude vineyards are producing wines of finesse and class and there is some ripping value to be had in this region.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
