- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
If you were going to pick your dream team of winemaking influences to produce Victorian Shiraz, I’d wager it would look a lot like Adam Louder’s resume.
His first experience with fine wine was a part-time job at the historic Best’s Great Western winery where he fell in love with the craft. From there, he moved on to be taken under the wing of one of Victoria’s most influential winemakers, the master of cool-climate Shiraz that was Trevor Mast at the iconic Mount Langhi Ghiran.
After stints in other corners of the winemaking world, Adam has come back home to Victoria to create SubRosa, a label designed “to explore the art and intricacies of all things wine.”
The 2015 Pyrenees Shiraz is about the exploration of a vineyard. It shows the balance and finesse of a winemaker now with 30 vintages under his belt. You can almost feel the nods of approval from his past tutors in every sip.
Made minimally with no fining and no filtration, the 74 dozen made of this rare gem of a wine will not be around for long.
What It Tastes Like
“Earthy, spicy scents, dusty cupboard, sniff of twigs and briar. Crisp in texture, some sweet, red and black fruitiness, white peppery spice, lick of mint and herbs. Nice, cool, restrained, even flow to this wine. Doesn’t match the reading of 14.9% on the label, evenly balanced and more genteel. Sleek. Lovely drink.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
92 points. “It’s just 17 kilometres from the Grampians shiraz in this range. Natural ferment, sees used oak. Winemaking kept very simple to reflect clear regionality.

About the Producer
Adam Louder’s career has been a long and prestigious one even though he is only in his mid-30s. With more than 30 vintages under his belt, he has worked with some true masters during his time at the press. From the early days under Trevor Mast at Mount Langhi Ghiran to Araujo Estate owned by Chateau Latour in the Napa Valley, to Chateau Carsin in Bordeaux and Pierro and Xanadu in Margaret River, the man has worked in world-class wineries his entire career. Now, his own label SubRosa is breaking through with a characterful range of interesting wines from Victoria. It’s an exciting project which should have a close eye kept on it.
The Pyrenees is renowned for its wines of presence and grace. Whether it is Syrah, Cabernet or Nebbiolo, the cool slopes of the Pyrenees consistently produce some of Victoria’s most remarkable wines. Classically, the wines are loaded with power and spice, with loads of flavour and great cellaring potential. One of the gems of Victoria wine.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
