- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Sam Connew is one of the hardest working people in Australian wine so it is wonderful to see her Stargazer brand taking flight. The Chardonnay is a tight and racy number. Picked on the earlier side to retain freshness and drive, this single vineyard in Coal River produces fruit with impressive concentration. A keen eye for structure, complexity and judiciously applied high-quality oak sees Sam's 2015 release poised for a long life in the cellar or a short time on the table in front of a plate of freshly caught shellfish.
What it Tastes Like
Rasor sharp Chardonnay built on a line of steely acid with crunch and chew 'a plenty. Shows white peach and citrus characters with a hint of sulphides. Impeccable length. One for the Chablis fans, I'd say.
96 points " Hand-picked I10V1 clones planted '99, whole bunch-pressed, wild-fermented in French oak (40% new), matured for 9 months. Bright, light straw-green, just as it should be, as is everything else. Grapefruit is the driving force on a very long, super-intense palate and aftertaste, the new oak totally absorbed by the fruit." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 90+ points. "Clearly in the lean and long camp. There’s not a lot of flesh here. Grapefruit and cucumber, steel and spice. Green, tart apple characters. A mouthwatering style, high on refreshment, finesse and cool, lingering acidity. It’s going to need some time." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
Sam Connew. Previous Chief Winemaker a the famous Wirra Wirra vineyards, said she’d never start her own label.
She packed her bags and left the Vale to her home in the Hunter Valley. A couple of trips to Tassie later, and boom, Stargazer was born. It is a labour of love for Sam, making small quantities of wine from small parcels of fruit. Striving for individuality and quality.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
