Peter Schell rarely sits still, and here we have yet another innovative drop from one of our favourite winemakers - Spinifex’s first 100% Clairette.
Clairette is another Southern French variety - a white grape this time - that Pete regularly uses as blending component in wines like his much loved ‘Lola’. Pete loves acidity in his wines and Clairette is one of those Mediterranean varieties that so naturally holds its acidity and retains freshness.
There’s only a handful of 100% Clairettes in Australia, and it comes as no surprise that Pete has been able to coax something special out of the grape. It’s Barossa-born and made very naturally, and definitely one to try for lovers of textural whites with a point of difference.
What It Tastes Like
On the nose, subtle perfume of rose petal and quince, green apple and hints of fennel. On the palate, minerality is to the fore, with subtle savoury notes and a herbal edge of fennel on the palate. This wine is all about texture and length of palate.
A Mediterranean variety that naturally holds acidity and is used to add freshness to the white blends of the Rhone Valley.
The fruit for this is sourced from a southern Barossa Vineyard with limestone based soils. The wine is made using natural acid and indigenous yeasts and is unfiltered. Although this is the first release of this variety as a straight up style, Pete has a long history of using Clairette as a blending component of the much loved Lola.

About the Producer
Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.
Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
