Sons of Eden is another of the new breed of Barossa labels turning the region on its head. They are a partnership between a winemaker (Corey Ryan) and Viticulturist (Simon Cowham) who both "learnt and refined their trades in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley". There are two Shiraz in their ‘Mystical Series’ of wines; Remus and Romulus. These ‘twin’ wines are named after the two brothers who are said to have built Rome. As legend has it, Romulus, the brawnier and stronger of the two (the Barossa Shiraz in this case) killed his more refined, and elegant brother Remus (the Eden Valley equivalent), in a war over the naming of the city. The best of their Eden Valley wines, Remus is sourced from two separate 50+ year old vineyards. With a rigorous fruit selection policy and a healthy whack of new French oak, (Romulus gets the gutsier American oak treatment) this wine is recognised as one of the highest quality examples of premium Shiraz from the region. If you look for only truly exceptional wines that speak emphatically of their terroir, then Remus is as dignified and eloquent an example as you are likely to come across.
What it Tastes Like
Black pepper, sweet toasty cedar dressed to kill. This is long and high-impact Shiraz. Density and power to burn. Sweet inky plums and licorice, long strands of spice-riddled tannin. Top class.
95 points "Silky smooth. Coffee chocolates, exotic spice, black fruit, lavender and other floral perfume. Flood of black and blue fruit and spice, inward perfume, thickness without being heavy, and a long finish where the tannin finally makes its escape from the folds of fruit, and shapes up the finale most impressively. A winner for fanciers of Eden Valley Shiraz." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front) 94 points "Violet purple, if less lurid purple when placed next to the Romulus. There’s real complexity here in that true Eden Valley way, with wafts of black pepper, blueberry fruit and then blackberry aplenty. Every glance throws up another layer of powerful purple fruit and more, the alcohol surprisingly integrated, the tannins light but not soft. Classy wine in a very classic, carefully contained purple fruit power Eden Valley mode." - Andrew Graham (Oz Wine Review)
A story that has intrigued us for years is the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome, Romulus and Remus. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus was more refined, focussed and elegant. We believe the twins’ characterise the distinctive and unique flavours and attributes of Shiraz from the twin valleys - the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.

Sons of Eden
Sons of Eden is another of the new breed of Barossa labels turning the region on its head, and a partnership between a winemaker (Corey Ryan) and viticulturist (Simon Cowham) who both “learnt and refined their trades in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley”. James Halliday has awarded them his 5 red star rating.
Eden Valley is the cooler more elegant brother of the brawny Barossa. Renowned for slick Shiraz, floral and lifted Riesling and even some stonkingly good Cabernet, the wines of this area provide a great counterpoint to the usual out and out power that South Australian wine has become known for.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
