- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
For freshness and vitality in the land of Bordeaux varieties, the modern expressions of Cabernet Franc popping up all over the country really take the cake.
This “enchanting” version of the variety comes from Somos - two young winemakers and free spirits in South Australia making wines from varieties they see as underrepresented.
This was picked and pressed early, matured in old French oak, every decision along the winemaking path looking for immediate drinkability. Made in a fresh and frisky style, after tasting this it’s easy to see where the surge in popularity for Cab Franc is coming from.
Campbell Mattinson gave it a big thumbs up, with 92 points and the comment that for him it’s a, “Huge yes for drinkability and interest.”
What It Tastes Like
“Enchanting wine. Cool and frisky but with enough meat on its bones to satisfy. Fresher than a sea breeze. Herbs and grasses but bitumen and licorice-strap too. Floral elements. The more you look the more you find. Huge yes for drinkability and interest.” - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
The Somos wines are the product of two enthusiastic young winemakers - one Australian and one Mexican - looking to make wines from new and interesting varieties grown in classic regions. Benjamin Caldwell and Mauricio Ruiz Cantu are the creative duo behind this exciting project, with the wines exported back to South & Contral America as well as sold through just a handful of outlets and venues locally in Australia. Their unique wines are made with a deft touch, the resulting styles bursting with energy and personality. Just minuscule volumes produced.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
C’Franc, as it is affectionately know, is often one of the more overlooked varieties from the Bordeaux region. Traditionally used as mainly a blending variety, this grape has been experiencing somewhat of a reinvigoration lately as more and more producers recognise its potential to create highly aromatic, crunchy and delectable reds in its own right.
