- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Dan Graham’s wines are non-conformist. Take his interesting twist on a GSM, convention making way for creativity.
The fruit sources for the 2015 Sigurd Red is an equal split between Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. The blend is made up of 50% Grenache, the rest divided up equally between Shiraz, Mourvedre and Nebbiolo.
What’s surprising is the influence 17% Nebbiolo can make to such a well-known wine style. The Neb brings structure and a tightness which can be lacking in these sorts of blends and it makes for a ballistically drinkable red for any occasion.
What It Tastes Like
This smells of sweet strawberry jam, some toast and nuts. It’s a juicy, bouncy, smashable red built around red berried goodness. Those Nebbiolo tannins really cut through. It rings clear as a bell with a tight, refreshing acid line carving its way through the palate. A nervy tension is the impression. Whoa, could drink an awful lot of this.
50% Barossa Valley, 50% McLaren Vale.
Fermented naturally as separated batches. Fruit receives no adjustment save a dash of sulphur. Final blend is 50% Grenache, 16.66% Shiraz, 16.66% Mourvedre, 16.66% Nebbiolo.
Closure: Diam Cork
Bottle Size: 750ml
About the Producer
From one of the country’s most recognisable wine operations comes this winemaker with a desire to create something new. Dan Graham has quietly started Sigurd with the intention of exploring a more gentle and hands off approach to the winemaking process. The wines are textural and mercurial but always interesting. It’s just the beginning for this label and the future looks extremely promising.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
