- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The name Sentio loosely translates from Latin to feel or perceive. This term perfectly distills the philosophy of winemaker Chris Catlow.
He endeavours for the drinker to see the vineyard in each wine. To experience the characteristics that a single patch of earth can impart on its fruit.
This Macendon Ranges Chardonnay is a great example of that idea. Though it is made exactly the same as its Beechworth and Yarra Valley counterparts, this is a decidedly more muscular and athletic version of the variety.
This guy gets Chardonnay and this suite of ‘15 releases are his best to date. If you like to get in on the ground floor with the next generation of wine superstars, Sentio is a name you need to get familiar with.
What It Tastes Like
This is Chardonnay with some muscle. Powerhouse fruit built on a laserbeam of acidity. Oak sitting in support, providing the housing for the pear and nectarine like fruit. It’s big shouldered but streamlined. A lot of Chardonnay crammed into the bottle.
94 points. “It’s an effortless wine and it makes for effortless drinking. One sip and you know you’re onto a very good thing. It has power and complexity, in spades, but moreso it has momentum; of the irresistible variety. Grapefruit, pear, white peach and citrus; a general flintiness; a general succulence. The finish is neat, dry and persistent at once. Terrific chardonnay.”

About the Producer
Chris Catlow is one of Beechworth’s most dynamic young winemakers. In his handmade winery he is crafting Burgundian inspired wines of impressive quality. The wines focus on power and drive, structure and articulation of site. He is exploring the regionality of Victoria with an incisive eye.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
