- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
When you are named as one of the finalists for the Young Guns of Wine Awards in only your third vintage, you must be doing something right. The key to Santolin's early success has been a focus on pure varietal expressions from single sites. Adrian and Rebecca scour Victoria for the perfect vineyard to make their ideal version of a particular grape. In this case, their search for Sangiovese lead them to the Yarraland vineyard in the Yarra Valley. With the well-draining soils on this site, these vines must dig deep in order to survive. The fruit that they produced in this near perfect season is top-notch. This is a spicy, elegant expression of Sangiovese, supported by the characteristic rustic tannins of the variety. Their first crack and Sangio and they have nailed it.
What it Tastes Like
"Medium bodied with aromas of raspberries, blackcurrant and blueberries. Complex, savoury palate with red berry fruit flavours and earthy tannins. Lingering acidity." - Santolin Wines
Vintage 2015 Grapes 100% Yarra Valley Sangiovese Vineyard Notes This wine is produced from fruit grown on a single block in the Yarraland Vineyard, Chirnside Park. The vineyard sits approximately 100m above sea level. The vines were first planted in 1994 with more plantings throughout the late 90s. The soil is a clay loam over deep clay which assists drainage to encourage deep root growth. All vines are vertically shoot positioned to maximise the sun exposure across the canopy and fruit is hand picked. Vintage 2015 had a perfect growing season resulting in one of the best vintages we have seen in recent times. A mild spring with a few significant rainfall events when required was followed by a dry and warm summer creating ideal ripening conditions. Winemakers Notes Hand picking commenced on April 13th, 2015. 100% whole berries were lightly crushed before being transferred to an open fermenter and left to ferment naturally over a 14 day period with regular hand plunging. Once dry, the ferment was pressed to seasoned French oak barrels where it underwent malolactic fermentation. On completion of malo, the wine was sulphured then matured on lees until blending and a single, gentle filtration before bottling.

Heathcote’s reputation is for big Shiraz. And they do it so well. But the times they are a changin’ with Italian varieties such as Fiano, Sangiovese, Nero d’Avola and Sagrantino all finding themselves well at home in the ancient Cambrian soils.
