Adrian Santolin has a keen eye for top quality vineyards throughout Victoria. It may come as no surprise to some that if you want good Nero d’Avola fruit, then the Chalmers Vineyard in Heathcote is where you want to go.
The 2015 is a beautifully balanced wine. It combines the trademark playful exuberance of the variety with the rustic chalm that only comes with minimal interventionist winemaking.

This 2015 Nero d’Avola has been produced from fruit grown at Chalmers vineyard in Heathcote, Victoria. It has been hand crafted using whole berries, wild fermentation and minimal intervention. No fining was used in the making of this wine.
Vintage 2015 had a perfect growing season resulting in one of the best vintages we have seen in recent times. A mild spring with a few significant rainfall events when required was followed by a dry and warm summer creating ideal ripening conditions.
Hand picking commenced on March 10th, 2015. Grapes were then chilled overnight. 10% whole bunches and 90% whole berries were transferred to an open fermenter then left to ferment naturally over a 14 day period with regular hand plunging. Once dry, the ferment was pressed to seasoned French oak barrels where it underwent malolactic fermentation. On completion of malo, the wine was sulphured then matured on lees until blending. Wine was not fined and given a single, gentle filtration before bottling.

Heathcote’s reputation is for big Shiraz. And they do it so well. But the times they are a changin’ with Italian varieties such as Fiano, Sangiovese, Nero d’Avola and Sagrantino all finding themselves well at home in the ancient Cambrian soils.
Australian Nero d’Avola is one of the easiest-drinking red wines you are likely to find. This playful Sicilian variety is typically light to medium bodied, filled with jubey dark fruits and soft, silky tannins. It’s all about juicy drinkability with Nero. Though some cross the boundary into the area of ‘fine wine’, the majority are built to deliver maximum enjoyment as an early drinking style. Perfect for sharing with good friends and good food. The fact that it perfectly suits the Australian climate is just another tick in its box. Nero d’Avola is a variety that will play a big part in the future of Australian wine.
