- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
If you are looking for a hot tip when visiting McLaren Vale, do yourself a favour and make the journey to Samuel's Gorge. The cellar door looks out on one of the region's most stunning vistas and the brilliance of the wines only magnify the experience. This is winemaker Justin McNamee's tribute to the Shiraz grape. Shiraz, he says, "reins over our province and for that matter, most regions in South Australia. Its magnitude in accessibility ought not to be confused with the magnitude of fruit flavour. It has charmed the world because it delivers concentration but concentration on a multitude of levels." It's a wine built around texture and balance, not out-and-out power. A more rustic and earthy representation of this famous coupling of variety and place. This is one of McLaren Vale's best-kept secrets.
What it Tastes Like
This is a silky, slippery Shiraz that oozes sweet red plum and blackberry flavours. It's super fragrant, a perfumed Shiraz from this part of the world. Plums and cherries dipped in dark chocolate. It's shapely and well proportioned. Muscular and toned. It's ribbed with sheets of chalky tannin but the suppleness of the fruit makes it so inviting. Great release. Good to go now but would look great with a little age.
94 points "Boysenberry, a sort of glacé cherry and rose oil perfume, dark chocolate and black olives. It’s full bodied, with ripe cherry and chocolate, but offers a distinct earthy and savoury flavour too, with ripe grainy tannin pushing it along, well-settled acidity, and a long plump finish. Very good, and interesting too." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Perhaps our most silky Shiraz yet. not the animal of 2014, but with subtle bacon bone and sopressa flavours. It shows the nuances of seasonal variation. Bequeath it to your kids, or drink it before they get their hands on it. Tomb: 10 + years
Bottle Size: 750ml
Drink Until: 2025
About the Producer
Samuel’s Gorge is one of McLaren Vale’s best-kept secrets. There, in his quiet neck of the woods, winemaker Justin McNamee is on a mission to build “wines that are distinctly Australian with reference to the old world for texture, complexity and harmony.” They are scarcely available but highly renowned, the Shiraz and Grenache considered his fortè alongside his stellar examples of Tempranillo and Graciano. These are wines with a distinct personality and a rustic feel. A unique offering from this diverse South Australian region.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
