- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Sierra Reed has spent years as a vagabond as she travelled the world soaking up as much wine knowledge as possible. She has settled in Western Victoria, intent on crafting small batches of intricate wines with as few adornments as possible. This is her Knife Edge Shiraz sourced from the Hyde Park vineyard in the Grampians. She knows her way around a Victorian Shiraz from her days at Mount Langi Ghiran and it shows in this release. A quarter was fermented as whole bunches, all seeing larger format oak for maturation. A deft touch applied here. The 2015 is a supple, feathery style of Shiraz replete with clean fruit and shot with spice. It's a wine built for the lovers of more elegant, streamlined reds, more about subtle pleasures than raw power. After trying this release, Mike Bennie called hers "A project to watch...", and we wholeheartedly agree.
What it Tastes Like
"Slides and glides around the palate with supple texture, sprinkle of peppery spice, concentration of flavour without heft. It smells regional and of Aussie bush, pepper, red and black berries, fennel and earthiness. Darker fruits to taste but a rise of glossy acidity lifts and pulls the wine long. Tannin is soft and sighing, but does provide shape. Beautiful drinking here." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
93 points. "“Thank you for supporting an expression of my art” says the charming hand written-and-decorated neck tag swinging around the neck of the bottle. This is a new project from Sierra Reed, whose winemaking endeavours have found her globetrotting, and a resume that includes grape handling at Rippon, Chiara Boschis, Lethbridge, Domaine de Vissoux and Mount Langi, amongst others. The focus is on Western Victoria, but there’s a first release Barossa Valley wine in the mix for good measure. Reed has a quiet confidence and determination about her, and seems to cross pollinate with an intelligent, independent mob of younger gen winemakers from around various bits of Victoria (and further afield). Good vibes. This wine comes from the Hutton Block on Hyde Park Vineyard in Grampians, Victoria. It sees about a quarter of the wine fermented as whole bunch and it is aged in large format old oak barrels. A project to watch, me thinks. Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
